In Mark 1:16-20 the Bible tells us the story of 4 brothers.  Simon and Andrew, James and John.  Fishermen by trade.  Most likely fishing had been the family trade for generations, so what else would they do?  I like to picture the scene, so bear with me if you will.

It was probably a day like any other day, perhaps it was early in the morning.  I like to think that it was, because it talks about Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee and Simon and Andrew were casting their nets.  I imagine the dusky, gray-blue sky and calm waters.  The sound of water lapping the shore, a few birds flying overhead and idle chatter coming from the fishermen.  Just an ordinary day that would lead to another ordinary day and then another and another.  Or would it?  They weren’t thinking about Jesus, the Bible doesn’t say they were anyway.  They weren’t searching for a Savior.  But, He was searching for them and he knew just where to find them.  The Bible tells us in verse 16

Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishermen. And Jesus said unto them, “Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.”  And straightaway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

James and John too were in their boat with their father Zebedee, but by the time Jesus had reached these two they were mending their nets, so maybe it was later in the day.  They too were not thinking of doing anything else, but fishing.  I’m sure they were comfortable with the fact that they would be fishermen the rest of their lives.  They weren’t expecting what would happen next.  Verse 19 tells us of their encounter with Jesus:

And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.  And straightaway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants and went after him.

They went after him!  He called, they answered.  They dropped everything and immediately followed him.  Have you done that?  Have you been called by the Savior Jesus Christ and dropped what you were doing to go after him?  If you haven’t and you hear His call I urge you to go after Him today!

We are all dead in our sins.  We have no desire to stop what we are doing or to change our lives.  Then, we hear Him calling us.  Maybe we are in a church service.  Maybe we’re lying in bed, restless and unable to sleep.  Maybe we’re in a boat, fishing much like our brothers above.  It doesn’t matter, He is calling out to us and we can’t ignore it.  We must be like these young disciples and drop all we have planned for ourselves and follow him.  We must be willing to do whatever He asks us to do and He just wants us to follow after Him.  These men could never imagine what sights they would behold.  Lame men walking, blind men seeing and a dead man walking out of a tomb, just to name a few.  What if they had stayed in the boat?  What if they had said no to Jesus?  He chose them and if you feel Him calling you, he chose you too!  Get on your knees then get on your feet and follow Him.
